Q: How long have you been working at Dawes?
I’ve been with Dawes for three and a half years – I joined in April 2017. Before that I worked in motor underwriting at Shannons for four years. Shannons was more the classic, muscle and modified car market while Dawes is more prestige motor insurance and classic car motor insurance.
Q: Have you always worked in motor insurance?
Shannons was my first role in the insurance industry. I started my career as a smash repairer and then worked in a sales role at Vodafone. When I joined Shannons I was looking to combine the two, I missed working with cars and wanted to use my sales knowledge. My background as a smash repairer gives me a unique understanding of the time and costs it takes to repair cars in the event of a claim and of just what’s involved.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy being active and taking care of myself so I start most mornings with a cardio session followed by a weight session at lunchtime. And my evenings are pretty quiet – I like to get my eight hours of sleep! My ideal weekend is spent catching up with friends and family and going out for a big dinner.
Q: What type of car do you drive and what is your dream car?
At the moment I drive a Volkswagon Polo GTI but I recently obtained my motorcycle licence so I just bought a motorcycle, a Yamaha MT07. I’ve previously done a lot of off-road riding but I recently moved and that provided the impetus to buy a motorbike to get around a little bit easier. A good friend of mine has a bike and we recently went out for our first cruise, which was amazing. And it adds another layer of knowledge that I can bring to my role at Dawes.
If I could have any car it would be a Pagani Huayra. There were only 100 of them made and they cost about $5.5 million in Australia (and you can’t really even drive them here). It’s an amazing, well put together car, with a lot of attention to detail, which I really appreciate. The design of it is completely different to any of the more well-known exotic cars such as Ferraris or Lamborghinis. But when I was younger the poster car on my bedroom wall as a Ferrari F40, and I still love those, but they’re a bit too common now.
Q: Is there a road trip you’d love to do?
I’d love to do a road trip on my bike, but I’ll probably start small. I’m keen to tour along the Murray River to Melbourne, with lots of stops along the way.
Q: Is there anything about you that other people find strange?
I have a lot of car knowledge and can talk all day about cars, which I imagine might seem a bit strange to anyone new I meet but my friends and family are used to it by now. Truth be told, I’m a bit of a car nerd!
